It was more than a bit galling for Simon and I to see James Patterson claim his messenger based app hadn’t been done before…. We got there first, but not on Facebook.
Our app, Catch A Killer, allows you to start the story from the phone of Special Agent Rose Blake. Your task is to set up a date with suspected serial killer Shane Koenig, who is using ‘Dean’ as an alias! Players have had great fun, so why not give it a try? You have to decide the replies, but be careful, if he gets angry and logs off, you lose the game…
Not convinced? Read this excellent blogger’s review: http://zooloosbookdiary.co.uk/bookreview-of-playing-with-death-and-appreview-by-lee-francis-and-simon-scarrow-_leefrancis-simonscarrow-annecater-jessfarrugia-headlinepg-randomthingstours
It took around 5 months of part time development and was entirely self funded. I worked on it unpaid. Simon and I wrote the script, Dez Kirkup composed an atmospheric score, Alex Scarrow (Simon’s brother) done the incredible artwork and my brother Karl done the intricate programming. It was a truly collaborative effort.
Whilst we would have loved to make the app longer, we had a set time frame and budget to work with. It takes around ten minutes to play and serves as an introduction to the world of the story.
Sadly, it was overlooked by most reviewers, bloggers and barely got any significant coverage. Any mention of it was also left out the paperback by the publisher.
